about

I’ve long had difficulty sleeping at night, but the pandemic kicked that into overdrive. I would often find myself laying awake for hours, unable to fall asleep and haunted by dark thoughts that moved through my mind like worms.

As I began working on this track, I came to think of these thoughts as a kind of entity of their own, a sort of psychic haunting that would torment me at night.

This prompted an interest in the phenomenon of “sleep paralysis,” in which people find themselves unable to move their bodies, and are often visited by dark apparitions.

These strange phenomena transcend cultures and seem to have recurring themes and characters that a great many people throughout history have experienced.

There is the Hat Man, a dark figure in a hat that often visits people in these states. Or the Rake, a tall, looming creature who stands at the edge of people’s bed and whose visage causes panic and terror.
There are succubi and incubi and other figures who visit people in their sleep, and these experiences are far more common than one would expect.

“The Night Callers” explores these themes and hopefully points to some vital force within us that can be called to exorcise them, be they actual demons or dark unshakable fears.
