about

One of the recurring themes of the pandemic was that of mutation and “variants” of the coronavirus. Every few months, a new strain of the virus would become dominant with different effects, risks, and virulence.
None was as impactful as the Omicron variant, which first appeared in November 2021. Both far less fatal and far more contagious, Omicron became the dominant strain of coronavirus within a couple months of the first cases. It quickly spread at an uprecedented rate, only to collapse again once it reached the limits of how many people it could possibly infect.
This combination of spreading rapidly and being less dangerous contributed more than anything to the decline of the pandemic, as it conferred at least partial immunity to vast swaths of the planet without approaching the death tolls that previous strains had achieved.
The idea of mutation became a subject of fascination for me, and there was something about the music for this piece that felt very much like a process of continual variation.
This concept was also the basis for the music video for “Omicron,” in which I used the MidJourney bot to generate images of coronaviruses, and by choosing which variations I thought were the most interesting and allowing them to make more iterations, I guided a process of virtual “evolution” to create more than 600 images that change over time and were then synced to the music.
